Divine Mercy and Divine Grace

John 3:16-17 " For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."

Help for those in dire need!

When listening to the news this past week I certainly felt the dire need of all who were in the countries where stories ran. People in Libya, New Zealand, Egypt, Iray, Algeria, Tunisia, Yemen, Bahrain, Quatar , even here in the United States. The world seems to be in the greaterst turmoil with the future so much in doubt this is when prayer becomes so critical. Certainly there is Hope! The Divine Mercy of Jesus is our hope and He is our refuge. In her diary St. Faustina wrote:
Oh, how painful it is to Me that souls so seldom unite themselves to Me in Holy Communion. I wait for souls, and they are indifferent toward Me. I love them tenderly and sincerely, and they distrust Me. I want to lavish My graces on them, and they do not want to accept them. They treat Me as a dead object, whereas My Heart is full of love and mercy. In order that you may know at least some of My pain, imagine the most tender of mothers who has great love for her children, while those children spurn her love. Consider her pain. No one is in a position to console her. This is but a feeble image and likeness of My love.

Write, speak of My mercy. Tell souls where they are to look for solace; that is, in the Tribunal of Mercy [the sacrament of Reconciliation] . There the greatest miracles take place and are incessantly repeated. To avail oneself of this miracle, it is not necessary to go on a great pilgrimage or to carry out some external ceremony; it suffices to come with faith to the feet of My representative and to reveal to him one’s misery, and the miracle of Divine Mercy will be fully demonstrated. Were a soul like a decaying corpse so that from a human standpoint, there would be no hope of restoration and everything would already be lost, it is not so with God. The miracle of Divine Mercy restores that soul in full. Oh, how miserable are those who do not take advantage of the miracle of God’s mercy! You will call out in vain, but it will be too late.
The Mercy of Jesus is shown most in the Holy Eucharist. It is here in communion with Christ and His Church that we are closest to the mercies of God. Seek out Reconciliation and the Eucharist this week to get the help you most need. He is there waiting for each of us to meet us at our point of greatest need with all the graces that are beyond what we can ask or think. Todd

St. Maruthas (Patron Saint of Persia and Iran)

Bishop of Tagrit or Maypherkat in Mesopotamia, friend of St. John Chrysostom, d. before 420. Feast, 4 Dec. He is honoured by the Latins, Greeks, Copts, and Syrians. He brought into his episcopal city the relics of so many martyrs that it received the name Martyropolis. In the interests of the Church of Persia, which had suffered much in the persecution of Sapor II, he came to Constantinople, but found Emperor Arcadius too busily engaged in the affairs of St. John Chrysostom. Later Maruthas was sent by Theodosius II to the Court of Persia, and here, in spite of the jealousy and intrigues of the Magi, he won the esteem of King Yezdigerd by his affability, saintly life, and, as is claimed, by his knowledge of medicine. He was present at the general Council of Constantinople in 381 and at a Council of Antioch in 383 (or 390), at which the Messalians were condemned. For the benefit of the Persian Church he is said to have held two synods at Ctesiphon. He must not be confounded with Maruthas (Maruta), Monophysite Bishop of Tagrit (d. 649).

His writings include: (1) "Acts of the Persian Martyrs", found partly in Assemani, "Acta SS. mart. orient. et occident.", I (Rome, 1748), and more completely in Bedpan, ibid, II (Paris, 1891), 37-396. W. Wright's English translation was printed in "Journal of Sacred Literature" (Oct., 1865-Jan., 1866). Zingerle published it in German (Innsbruck, 1836). A school edition was made by Leitzmann, "Die drei altesten Martyrologien" (Bonn, 1903). See Achelis, "Die Martyrologien" (Berlin, 1900), 30-71. (2) "History of the Council of Nicaea", on which see Braun in "Kirchengeschichtliche Studien", IV, 3, and Harnack's "Ketzerkatalog des Bischofs Maruta" in "Texte u. Untersuchungen", XIX, 1, b. (3) "Acts of the Council of Seleucia-Ctesiphon", edited in Syriac and Latin by Lamy (Louvain, 1869), on which see Hefele, "Conciliengeschichte", II, 102. He also wrote hymns on the Holy Eucharist, on the Cross, and on saints.

As our brothers and sister in Iraq suffer insecurity, persecution, and martyrdom, let us pray that the intercession of St. Maruthas may bring peace, strength, and security.

Blessed Virgin Mary, who can worthily repay you with praise and thanks for having rescued a fallen world by your generous consent! Receive our gratitude, and by your prayers obtain the pardon of our sins. Take our prayers into the sanctuary of heaven and enable them to make our peace with God.

Holy Mary, help the miserable, strengthen the discouraged, comfort the sorrowful, pray for your people, plead for the clergy, intercede for all women consecrated to God. May all who venerate you feel now your help and protection. Be ready to help us when we pray, and bring back to us the answers to our prayers. Make it your continual concern to pray for the people of God, foryou were blessed by God and were made worthy to bear the Redeemer of the world, who lives and reigns forever. Amen.

Prayer For Help Against Spiritual Enemies

Glorious Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly hosts, who stands always ready to give assistance to the people of God; who fought with the dragon, the old serpent, and cast him out of heaven, and now valiantly defends the Church of God that the gates of hell may never prevail against her, I earnestly entreat you to assist me also, in the painful and dangerous conflict which I sustain against the same formidable foe.

Be with me, O mighty Prince! that I may courageously fight and vanquish that proud spirit, whom you, by the Divine Power, gloriously overthrew, and whom our powerful King, Jesus Christ, has, in our nature, completely overcome; so having triumphed over the enemy of my salvation, I may with you and the holy angels, praise the clemency of God who, having refused mercy to the rebellious angels after their fall, has granted repentance and forgiveness to fallen man. Amen.

Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday

Jn 20:19-31

"Confitemini Domino quoniam bonus, quoniam in saeculum misericordia eius"; "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good; his steadfast love endures for ever" (Ps 118: 1). So the Church sings on the Octave of Easter, as if receiving from Christ's lips these words of the Psalm; from the lips of the risen Christ, who bears the great message of divine mercy and entrusts its ministry to the Apostles in the Upper Room: "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.... Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained" (Jn 20: 21-23).

Before speaking these words, Jesus shows his hands and his side. He points, that is, to the wounds of the Passion, especially the wound in his heart, the source from which flows the great wave of mercy poured out on humanity. From that heart Sr Faustina Kowalska, the blessed whom from now on we will call a saint, will see two rays of light shining from that heart and illuminating the world: "The two rays", Jesus himself explained to her one day, "represent blood and water" (Diary, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, p. 132).

Blood and water! We immediately think of the testimony given by the Evangelist John, who, when a solider on Calvary pierced Christ's side with his spear, sees blood and water flowing from it (cf. Jn 19: 34). Moreover, if the blood recalls the sacrifice of the Cross and the gift of the Eucharist, the water, in Johannine symbolism, represents not only Baptism but also the gift of the Holy Spirit (cf. Jn 3: 5; 4: 14; 7: 37-39).

Divine Mercy reaches human beings through the heart of Christ crucified: "My daughter, say that I am love and mercy personified", Jesus will ask Sr Faustina (Diary, p. 374). Christ pours out this mercy on humanity though the sending of the Spirit who, in the Trinity, is the Person-Love. And is not mercy love's "second name" (cf. Dives in misericordia, n. 7), understood in its deepest and most tender aspect, in its ability to take upon itself the burden of any need and, especially, in its immense capacity for forgiveness?

...Jesus told Sr Faustina: "Humanity will not find peace until it turns trustfully to divine mercy" (Diary, p. 132). Through the work of the Polish religious, this message has become linked for ever to the 20th century, the last of the second millennium and the bridge to the third. It is not a new message but can be considered a gift of special enlightenment that helps us to relive the Gospel of Easter more intensely, to offer it as a ray of light to the men and women of our time.

...as the Apostles once did, today too humanity must welcome into the upper room of history the risen Christ, who shows the wounds of his Crucifixion and repeats: Peace be with you! Humanity must let itself be touched and pervaded by the Spirit given to it by the risen Christ. It is the Spirit who heals the wounds of the heart, pulls down the barriers that separate us from God and divide us from one another, and at the same time, restores the joy of the Father's love and of fraternal unity.

It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church will be called "Divine Mercy Sunday". In the various readings, the liturgy seems to indicate the path of mercy which, while re-establishing the relationship of each person with God, also creates new relations of fraternal solidarity among human beings. Christ has taught us that "man not only receives and experiences the mercy of God, but is also called "to practise mercy' towards others: "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy' (Mt 5: 7)" (Dives et misericordia, n. 14). He also showed us the many paths of mercy, which not only forgives sins but reaches out to all human needs. Jesus bent over every kind of human poverty, material and spiritual.

His message of mercy continues to reach us through his hands held out to suffering man. This is how Sr Faustina saw him and proclaimed him to people on all the continents when, hidden in her convent at £agiewniki in Kraków, she made her life a hymn to mercy: Misericordias Domini in aeternum cantabo.

...love of God and love of one's brothers and sisters are inseparable, as the First Letter of John has reminded us: "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments" (5: 2). Here the Apostle reminds us of the truth of love, showing us its measure and criterion in the observance of the commandments.

It is not easy to love with a deep love, which lies in the authentic gift of self. This love can only be learned by penetrating the mystery of God's love. Looking at him, being one with his fatherly heart, we are able to look with new eyes at our brothers and sisters, with an attitude of unselfishness and solidarity, of generosity and forgiveness. All this is mercy!

To the extent that humanity penetrates the mystery of this merciful gaze, it will seem possible to fulfil the ideal we heard in today's first reading: "The community of believers were of one heart and one mind. None of them ever claimed anything as his own; rather everything was held in common" (Acts 4: 32). Here mercy gave form to human relations and community life; it constituted the basis for the sharing of goods. This led to the spiritual and corporal "works of mercy". Here mercy became a concrete way of being "neighbour" to one's neediest brothers and sisters.

Sr Faustina Kowalska wrote in her Diary: "I feel tremendous pain when I see the sufferings of my neighbours. All my neighbours' sufferings reverberate in my own heart; I carry their anguish in my heart in such a way that it even physically destroys me. I would like all their sorrows to fall upon me, in order to relieve my neighbour" (Diary, p. 365). This is the degree of compassion to which love leads, when it takes the love of God as its measure!

It is this love which must inspire humanity today, if it is to face the crisis of the meaning of life, the challenges of the most diverse needs and, especially, the duty to defend the dignity of every human person. Thus the message of divine mercy is also implicitly a message about the value of every human being. Each person is precious in God's eyes; Christ gave his life for each one; to everyone the Father gives his Spirit and offers intimacy.

This consoling message is addressed above all to those who, afflicted by a particularly harsh trial or crushed by the weight of the sins they committed, have lost all confidence in life and are tempted to give in to despair. To them the gentle face of Christ is offered; those rays from his heart touch them and shine upon them, warm them, show them the way and fill them with hope. How many souls have been consoled by the prayer "Jesus, I trust in you", which Providence intimated through Sr Faustina! This simple act of abandonment to Jesus dispels the thickest clouds and lets a ray of light penetrate every life. Jezu, ufam tobie.

To our visitors today from the nations of the United States, South Africa, Senegal, Australia, Canada, China,Costa Rica, Croatia, India,  Iran, New Zealand, Vietnam, the Netherlands, and the Ukraine thank you for stopping by.
We welcome the guests today from these countries. Please pray for each of these nations so that they join in the crusade to bring Devotion to the Divine Mercy of Jesus to the whole world. May we always be united in our love for Jesus, His Church, His Mission which is the salvation of the whole world.

Jesus said to Saint Faustina "(Let) the greatest sinners place their trust in My mercy. They have the right before others to trust in the abyss of My mercy. My daughter, write about My mercy towards tormented souls. Souls that make an appeal to My mercy, delight Me. To such souls I grant even more graces than they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to my compassion, but on the contrary, I justify him in My unfathomable and inscrutable mercy." (Diary 1146)

My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.

On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy (Diary 699)

As I was contemplating what has happened in the world, in my personal and family life so far in 2011 I have come to the conclusion that I have no idea what could happen next. Riots and governments collapsing, people gaining political freedom, earthquakes and natural disasters, the revealing of the evil of planned parenthood, the vote to defund that organization, the issues with State governments running out of money etc. etc.
All I can think of is I need to pray more. I need to pray for the salvation of the souls of all of my family, our loved ones and their families. I need to pray not just for the ending of abortion, but the repentance and salvation of all who are involved with that industry. I need to pray for God's mercy on each and everyone of us in a spirit of truth and humility.
This world needs the Divine Mercy of God so much more today than ever before. The only cure for our mess is the Divine Mercy of God. As Jesus told St. Faustina, pray for His Mercy before He comes as Judge.
My heart sometimes is not in it. Sometimes it gets to be too much, there is indeed still a lot of good in the world and good things are happening for that I am very thankful. I just need to remember, I would never have become Catholic if it were not for the Holy Mother Mary and the reason I am is to fulfill this apostolate.
So please join me in praying the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the Stations of the Cross as often as you can for Peace, the Intentions of the Holy Father Pope Benedict, the Holy souls in purgatory, the salvation of all souls, the ending of abortion, and the necessities and intentions of at least 10 other people.   Please share this site with at least 10 other people and let them know the importance of prayer. This is a crusade and I am truly looking for 3 million people worldwide to join it. I believe with all my heart that many of us praying these prayers will certainly have a global impact. There is so much that needs done, pray more, do more acts of mercy and ask the Saints to help. God bless, Todd

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE,PRAY FOR AN END TO ABORTION

Fr. Pavone Mourns Passing of Former Abortion Leader Turned Pro-Life Hero, Dr. Bernard Nathanson

Priests for Life

Monday, February 21, 2011

Rome – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, said in a statement today that the life of Dr. Bernard Nathanson is one of the most remarkable stories of God’s mercy and power.

“My own life has intersected with his since the mid-80’s, and our last time together was just last week” Fr. Pavone explained. “Years ago, Dr. Nathanson said, ‘I uncaged the abortion monster in the United States,’ and then he told us priests that he and his former colleagues ‘would never have gotten away with what we did if you had been united, purposeful and strong.’ That assertion is at the core of our ministry of Priests for Life.”

Fr. Pavone continued, “I will never forget the workshop at which I introduced him at the 1994 Human Life International Conference in Irvine, CA. He was supposed to talk about chemical abortion, but at the last minute decided instead to speak of his spiritual journey. At the end of the talk, he said that he was standing on the brink of conversion to the Catholic Church. The room exploded. People were leaping into the air. He said that he hoped God could forgive him, and I said, ‘Dr. Nathanson, he already has.’ And I reminded him of that exchange just last week.”

Dr. Nathanson appears in the introductory video of Priests for Life. “He called Priests for Life the ‘Paul Revere’ of the pro-life movement, and said that he was always immensely grateful for our work, because though he caught the Church asleep on the abortion issue in the late 60’s, he believed the Church could be re-activated to build the Culture of Life. In memory of Dr. Nathanson, we will redouble our efforts to do just that,” Fr. Pavone concluded.

Priests for Life is the nation's largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia. For more information, visit http://www.priestsforlife.org/.

Holy Mother the Church teaches us that we all desire God. Pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercedes for all for the salvation of our souls.

THE DESIRE FOR GOD

27 The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for:

The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he is called to communion with God. This invitation to converse with God is addressed to man as soon as he comes into being. For if man exists it is because God has created him through love, and through love continues to hold him in existence. He cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and entrusts himself to his creator.1

28 In many ways, throughout history down to the present day, men have given expression to their quest for God in their religious beliefs and behavior: in their prayers, sacrifices, rituals, meditations, and so forth. These forms of religious expression, despite the ambiguities they often bring with them, are so universal that one may well call man a religious being:

From one ancestor [God] made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him - though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For "in him we live and move and have our being."2

29 But this "intimate and vital bond of man to God" (GS 19 § 1) can be forgotten, overlooked, or even explicitly rejected by man.3 Such attitudes can have different causes: revolt against evil in the world; religious ignorance or indifference; the cares and riches of this world; the scandal of bad example on the part of believers; currents of thought hostile to religion; finally, that attitude of sinful man which makes him hide from God out of fear and flee his call.4

30 "Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice."5 Although man can forget God or reject him, He never ceases to call every man to seek him, so as to find life and happiness. But this search for God demands of man every effort of intellect, a sound will, "an upright heart", as well as the witness of others who teach him to seek God.

You are great, O Lord, and greatly to be praised: great is your power and your wisdom is without measure. And man, so small a part of your creation, wants to praise you: this man, though clothed with mortality and bearing the evidence of sin and the proof that you withstand the proud. Despite everything, man, though but a small a part of your creation, wants to praise you. You yourself encourage him to delight in your praise, for you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.6

Sirach 1:1-10

Psalm 93:1-2, 5

Mark 9:14-29

Guard your eyes that they may not look upon anything contrary to purity; your ears, that they may not listen to evil conversation; your mind, by banishing from it all suggestive thoughts; your heart, by stifling impure desires at their very birth.

“Fear of the Lord warms the heart.” (Sirach 1:10)

The Book of Sirach comes out of the “wisdom” tradition that also gave us books like Proverbs and Job. This compilation was written in Hebrew by a fellow named Jesus ben Sirach around 200 b.c.and translated into Greek seventy years later by his grandson. In his introduction, he commends his grandfather not only for studying the law, the prophets, and the other sacred writings but also for trying to help other people understand them. And so he invites us to read the book “in a spirit of attentive good will” (Sirach Introduction, verse 15).

All wisdom has its source in God, who lavishes it on his friends. Like the other wisdom writers, Sirach tells us that “fear of the Lord” is the beginning and the end of human wisdom (Sirach 1:1,12).

Perhaps you were raised with the notion of God as a stern judge keeping careful watch, waiting to pounce on your slightest indiscretion and punish you severely. Who wouldn’t fear such a Lord, powerful enough to make it extremely uncomfortable for his subjects? But how could this kind of servile fear lead to “glory and splendor, gladness and a festive crown”? How could it “warm the heart, giving gladness and joy” (Sirach 1:9,10)?

No, reverence for the God revealed in Scripture is nothing like that. To fear God is to be in awe of his power and knowledge. To fear him is to bow before mysteries we can never comprehend, like the fact that God gave us freedom to choose, even though our free choices often have dire consequences for ourselves and others. To fear God is to dare to believe that he created each one of us to know, love, and serve him in this life and be happy with him forever.

God is so much greater than we could ever ask, and so much closer than we could ever imagine. He loves us so much that he has taken on our flesh, forgiven our sins, and defeated our most terrifying enemies—even the last enemy, death.

This is a God to love, a God to reverence, and a God to honor with our whole lives!

“Lord, I am in awe of your majesty, your power, and your holiness. Most of all, I am in awe of your love. Let that love empower me to please you in all my thoughts, words, and actions.”

Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary 15 promises of the Rosary

The 15 Promises for those who recite the Rosary

The following are the 15 promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary:

(given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan)
http://transporter.com/FatherPeffley/Spirituality/why.html

1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces.

2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary.

3. The rosary will be a powerful armor against hell. It will destroy vice, decrease sin and defeat heresies.

4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.

5. Those who recommend themselves to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish.

6. Whoever shall recite the rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.

7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.

8. Those who are faithful to recite the rosary shall have during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.

9. I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the rosary.

10. The faithful children of the rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven.

11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the rosary.

12. All those who propagate the holy rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.

13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death.

14. All who recite the rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only son, Jesus Christ.

15. Devotion to my rosary is a great sign of predestination.

We must understand the importance of this simple prayer. The Rosary is the prayer of intercession for the Church. Please pray at least 5 decades daily. God bless, Todd

“He hardly knew what to say.” (Mark 9:6)

“He hardly knew what to say.” (Mark 9:6)
http://wau.org/meditations/current/

Every person has a specific temperament that they tend to carry throughout life. For example, some rarely speak, while others think carefully before they talk. And then there are those people who talk a lot—and who don’t always think before they speak! Peter was certainly in this category. Having a powerful vision of Jesus at the transfiguration, Peter was awestruck; he didn’t know what to say. So, of course, he was the first one to speak up!

If you try to follow Peter’s life in the Gospels, you’ll find that his tendency to speak and act impulsively is consistent—and in a way, even endearing. When he throws down his nets and leaves the catch of a lifetime just to follow Jesus (Luke 5:1-11), we are moved by his humility and devotion. When he is the first disciple to identify Jesus as “the Messiah,” we are impressed—and then we become sympathetic when Jesus rebukes him for misunderstanding the sacrificial nature of his mission (Mark 8:27-33). And here, as Jesus is being transfigured, Peter is at it again. Beholding Jesus’ heavenly glory, Peter wrongly assumes once more that he knows what’s going on. He believes that Jesus’ mission is about to come to its fulfillment, so he proposes erecting a monument to mark so auspicious an occasion.

Like Peter, we all want to try our best to figure out God’s plan—and that is a good thing. But sometimes, the secret to a deeper spiritual life means listening and not rushing to action. So often, the world tells us that we should move quickly to fix or advance every situation that seems out of kilter in our lives. But if we do this, we risk taking action before listening for the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit— whether through prayer, in Scripture, or in the advice of a trusted brother or sister in Christ.

Over time, Peter developed an attitude of waiting, listening, and asking. Through trial and error, he learned how to quiet his heart and discern the promptings of the Holy Spirit. And that’s great news for us. Like Peter, we too can become better listeners, both to God and to other people. All it takes is practice.

“Jesus, open my ears and my heart. Help me to value listening and learning more than advising and acting. Infuse my words and actions with wisdom and holy timing.”

THE MERCY

OF GOD IN THE

MISSION OF THE

CHURCH

In connection with this picture of our generation, a picture

which cannot fail to cause profound anxiety, there come to

mind once more those words which, by reason of the

Incarnation of the Son of God, resounded in Mary's

Magnificat, and which sing of "mercy from generation to

generation." The Church of our time, constantly pondering the

eloquence of these inspired words, and applying them to the

sufferings of the great human family, must become more

particularly and profoundly conscious of the need to bear

witness in her whole mission to God's mercy, following in the

footsteps of the tradition of the Old and the New Covenant,

and above all of Jesus Christ Himself and His Apostles. The

Church must bear witness to the mercy of God revealed in

Christ, in the whole of His mission as Messiah, professing it in

the first place as a salvific truth of faith and as necessary for a

life in harmony with faith, and then seeking to introduce it and

to make it incarnate in the lives both of her faithful and as far

as possible in the lives of all people of good will. Finally, the

Church—professing mercy and remaining always faithful to

it—has the right and the duty to call upon the mercy of God,

imploring it in the face of all the manifestations of physical and

moral evil, before all the threats that cloud the whole horizon

of the life of humanity today.

“The Son of Man must suffer greatly.” (Mark 8:31)

Picture a young family: A child is born, and the parents are delighted-—even though their lives are about to get a lot more complicated. They will spend the next couple of decades pouring out love, time, money, and energy for their child, because they want to give him or her the very best they can. They will go to work every day, maybe even at multiple jobs, to make ends meet. They’ll teach their child about right and wrong. They’ll live on a budget. They’ll care for their child’s heart-aches, stomach aches, and head-aches. And because their child is so young, he or she will have no idea of all that the parents are sacrificing.

In a similar way, Jesus pours out his love for us every day, simply because we’re worth it to him. His entire life on earth, in fact, was an offering of love. It cost us nothing but cost him everything. Imagine what it took for the eternal Son of God to give up his heavenly throne and become a helpless baby. He willingly, even eagerly, subjected him-self to all the challenges of living as a human being in this fallen world: pain, hunger, and temptation. He had to learn how to walk and talk.

He had to deal with the pain and sadness of Joseph’s death. He had to work as a carpenter to support his mother and himself. And then he had to make the difficult decision to leave Mary alone while he went out preaching and teaching.

Imagine, also, how hard it must have been for Jesus to endure accusations and rejection from some of his own people—the very ones he had come to serve and redeem. And to top it all off, he was nailed to a cross and died an agonizing, humiliating death as a blasphemer and criminal. And he did all of this because he loves you.

In prayer today, take a long look at Jesus’ life of sacrifice. The cost of our salvation was very high, but Jesus was happy to pay it. Reflect on this love, and allow it to move your heart. Listen closely, and you’ll hear Jesus tell you: “You’re worth it. I love you.”

“Jesus, I am in awe of your love for me! You have captured my heart, and I worship you.”

Defend doctrine, but don't attack others, pope says at audience

Defend doctrine, but don't attack others, pope says at audience

By Cindy Wooden

Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Even in the midst of the upheaval of the Protestant Reformation in Germany, St. Peter Canisius knew how to defend Catholic doctrine without launching personal attacks on those who disagreed, Pope Benedict XVI said.

St. Peter, a 15th-century Jesuit sent on mission to Germany, knew how to "harmoniously combine fidelity to dogmatic principles with the respect due to each person," the pope said Feb. 9 at his weekly general audience.

The pope was beginning a series of audience talks about "doctors of the church," who are theologians and saints who made important contributions to Catholic understanding of theology.

In St. Peter Canisius' own time, more than 200 editions of his catechisms were published, the pope said, and they were so popular in Germany for so long that up until "my father's generation people called a catechism simply a 'Canisius.'"

The saint, who was born in Holland, insisted there was a difference between willfully turning away from the faith and "the loss of faith that was not a person's fault under the circumstances, and he declared to Rome that the majority of Germans who passed to Protestantism were without fault," Pope Benedict said.

"In a historical period marked by strong confessional tensions, he avoided -- and this is something extraordinary -- he avoided giving into disrespect and angry rhetoric. This was rare at that time of disputes between Christians," the pope said.

In fact, he said, St. Peter Canisius recognized that the Catholic Church needed to be renewed and revitalized, and that such a process had to be built on solid education in the faith and in understanding the Scriptures, which is why his catechisms relied so heavily on the Bible.

His theological achievements, which earned him the title "doctor of the church" in 1925, were effective because his study, preaching and writing all flowed from a personal friendship with Christ, long periods of prayer and unity with the church under the leadership of the pope, he said.

With "peace, love and perseverance" he accomplished his task of renewing the Catholic Church in Germany even as Protestantism grew, the pope said.

The saint's life teaches Catholics today that "the Christian life does not grow except with participation in the liturgy, particularly the holy Mass on Sundays, and with daily personal prayer," the pope said. "In the midst of the thousands of activities and multiple stimuli that surround us, it is necessary each day to find moments for reflection to listen to and speak to the Lord."

St. Peter Canisius is a reminder that preaching the Gospel is effective only if the preacher has a personal relationship with Christ, is united with the church and "lives a morally coherent life," the pope said.
