On November 6, 1789, Archbishop Carroll was appointed as the first Bishop of the United States of America. He was named Archbishop of Baltimore and hence established Baltimore as the Primacial See for the United States. As one of his first acts as Bishop he consecrated his territory to the Blessed Virgin Mary, thus establishing that special devotion to Our Lady which She referenced in Her apparition as Our Lady of Lourdes on September 25th, 1956.
